biography

Carla Volpati was born in Como in 1954. Towards the end of the 1990s, she began a personal creative journey, which developed independently and continuously.

Her early works are characterised by the use of natural elements — small stones, pebbles and fragments — arranged in sequence on soft, rarefied colour backgrounds. In the following years, the initial compositional rigour gave way to new forms, stronger interventions on the colour of the background, and a wider range of materials, both natural and artificial.

In 2010, she created the cycle Made in Italy, inspired by the discovery of fragments of tiles marked with the well-known English expression identifying the Italian origin of a product. These fragments are interwoven with objects belonging to the personal sphere: small memories linked to stone and pebbles, repositories of a more ancient memory.

In the following years, she worked on the series In fila per sette (Lined up in sevens), Puppet, Inabox and Infolia, continuing to develop her expressive language between legacies of the past and the sensibility of the present.

More recently, she has approached Japanese poetic forms, particularly haiku and haibun, finding in the short form a continuity with her attention to nature and to the emotions suggested by the visual image.
