Carla Volpati

Searching

The stones, like other “fragments of nature” used by Carla Volpati, have in fact been the result of walks in open spaces: paths sought because of their “petrifaction” or encountered by chance during more complex journeys. In both cases these elements are characterised by their small size – for domestic use – by their round shape and nuances. But, above all, because they have been collected one by one as bearers of memories and sensations, they have been taken “home”, then carefully observed, cleaned and placed in a different compartments which guaranteed order and division, according to personal rules. Picking up world’s fragments, nature’s relics, telluric crumbs of time and space is like rearranging new world’s cosmogonies. It’s like telling about a piece of universal history that goes along with the little journey of the contemporaneity. And it’s when things’ memory thickens into a creative action, that a new language, capable of communicating beyond the personal sphere, is released. Sem Galimberti

There are small stones smoothed by the sea and fragments of nature eroded by time facing each other, licking on each other, pursuing each other and seeking for each other. Every works by Carla Volpati of tangible, palpable, smooth, rounded and pointed tracks. Traces of an ancient life collected while travelling in closer and further lands. Traces of real-life stories, often memories of her childhood: a strip of cloth, a button, a shell, an autumn leaf, a tiny ball of thread. Stefano Bianchi
